BMI is your weight divided by your height squared:
The categories in the table are the standard adult cutoffs used by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization. For children and teens, BMI is interpreted differently, using age- and sex-specific growth percentiles, so this tool is meant for adults age 20 and over.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. BMI is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis. It doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular people can show a high BMI. It also doesn't reflect where fat is carried, and it isn't meant for pregnancy. A doctor can look at the fuller picture.
Can I use this for my child?
This calculator uses adult categories. For anyone under 20, BMI is compared against growth charts for their age and sex, so check with a pediatrician or use the CDC's child and teen BMI tool.
What's a healthy weight for my height?
The calculator shows the weight range that corresponds to a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 for your height. It's a general guide. Your own healthy weight depends on other factors too.
