How to use the Flashcard Maker

  1. Name your deck and type a term and its definition on each row. Use + Add card for more, or open Paste a list to add many cards at once.
  2. Click Save deck to keep it in this browser. Saved decks appear in the Saved decks list for next time.
  3. Click Study all cards. Tap the card (or press Space) to flip it, and use the arrows to move around.
  4. Mark each card Got it or Still learning. When the round ends, study only the cards you are still learning.
  5. Use Shuffle to mix the order, switch to Definition first to test yourself the other way round, and Export a deck to back it up or share it.

How it works

Flashcards work because they make you retrieve an answer instead of just re-reading it. Trying to recall something, even when you get it wrong, strengthens memory more than reviewing notes. Splitting the deck into cards you know and cards you're still learning lets you spend your time where it helps most, and shuffling stops you from memorizing the order instead of the material.

The pasted-list option reads one card per line. It splits each line at the first tab character (what you get when you copy two columns from a spreadsheet) or, if there is no tab, at the first " - " (space, hyphen, space). Lines without a separator are skipped and counted so you can fix them. CSV files use the first column as the term and the second as the definition; a header row named term/definition is skipped. JSON exports contain the deck name and a list of cards and can be imported back in.

Your decks are saved in your browser's local storage on this device only. They are never uploaded, which also means they won't appear on your phone if you made them on a laptop. Export the deck and import the file on the other device. Clearing your browser's site data deletes saved decks, so export anything important.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards can a deck have?
There is no fixed limit. Browsers allow several megabytes of local storage per site, which is enough for thousands of text cards.

Can I make flashcards from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Select two columns (terms and definitions) in your spreadsheet, copy, and paste them into the Paste a list box. Each row becomes a card. You can also save the sheet as CSV and import it.

Are my flashcards private?
Yes. Everything stays in your browser; nothing is sent to a server. Anyone using the same browser profile on this device could open the page and see the saved decks, though.

Can I use images or formulas?
Cards hold plain text, including symbols and characters you can type or paste (like H₂O, π or é). Images are not supported.

What does "Reset progress" do?
It clears the Got it / Still learning marks on every card in the current deck so you can start fresh. The cards themselves are kept.
