How to use the Tip Calculator

1. Enter the bill total and how many people are splitting it.
2. Choose a tip percentage with a preset button or type your own.
3. Tick "round up" if you'd rather everyone pays a whole-dollar amount. The extra goes to the tip.

How it's calculated

When rounding is on, each share is rounded up to the next whole dollar and the tip is recalculated from the new total, so the server gets the difference.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
Either is common. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount. To do that, enter the subtotal before tax as the bill amount.

How much should I tip?
Customs vary by country and type of service. In U.S. sit-down restaurants, 15% to 20% is typical. Use whatever is customary where you are.

Why is the tip slightly higher when I round up?
Rounding each person's share up to a whole dollar raises the total, and the extra goes to the tip. The tool shows the actual tip percentage so you can see the difference.
