How to use the Typing Speed Test

  1. Pick a test length: 30, 60 or 120 seconds.
  2. Click the box and start typing the highlighted word. The clock starts with your first key.
  3. Press the space bar after each word to move on. Letters turn red as soon as you make a mistake, and you can fix the current word with backspace.
  4. When time runs out you'll see your net and gross words per minute, accuracy and how many words were wrong.
  5. Press New test or Esc to try again with fresh words.

How it works

Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), where one "word" means five characters, including the space after it. Using a fixed five-character word makes scores comparable no matter which words come up.

Gross WPM counts everything you typed: total characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Net WPM only counts words you typed correctly, so mistakes you left behind lower your score. Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that matched the expected letter, including ones you later corrected.

Example: in a 60-second test you type 250 characters, and the words you got right add up to 220 characters including spaces. Gross speed is 250 ÷ 5 = 50 WPM and net speed is 220 ÷ 5 = 44 WPM.

The words are picked at random from a pool of everyday words, so every test is different. Pasting is turned off so the result reflects real typing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed?
Many people type somewhere around 35 to 45 WPM. 60 WPM or more is quick, and 80+ is very fast. Accuracy matters just as much, because fixing mistakes slows you down.

Why is my net WPM lower than my gross WPM?
Gross WPM counts every character you typed. Net WPM counts only words you finished correctly, so any word left with a mistake is not included.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Tap the typing box to open your keyboard. Turn off autocorrect if your keyboard keeps changing words, because corrections can count as mistakes.

Is my typing stored or sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Only your best score is remembered, and only in this browser.

How can I type faster?
Practice a few minutes each day, keep your eyes on the screen instead of the keyboard, and aim for accuracy first. Speed follows once your fingers learn where the keys are.
