About this test

This test measures the Big Five, the personality model most widely used in psychology research. Instead of sorting people into boxes, it describes five traits that everyone has to some degree: Openness (curiosity and imagination), Conscientiousness (organization and follow-through), Extraversion (social energy), Agreeableness (warmth and cooperation) and Emotional Sensitivity (how strongly you react to stress, known in research as Neuroticism).

The statements come from the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP), a public-domain collection created by researchers so that anyone can use quality personality questions freely. The quick version uses IPIP-NEO trait statements; the detailed version uses the 120-item IPIP-NEO, which also measures sub-traits for each trait. We left out a few statements about voting, politics and moral values, because those are personal topics that a general-purpose quiz shouldn't ask about, so Openness is measured with slightly fewer statements than in the original versions. The result descriptions on this page were written for My Digital Drawer.

How scoring works: each answer counts from 1 to 5, with some statements reversed (agreeing with "I seldom feel blue" lowers Emotional Sensitivity, for example). Your score shows where your answers fall on the scale from 0 to 100. It is not a percentile and does not compare you with other people. Scores from 35 to 65 are shown as "balanced", and most people land there on several traits.

What it can and can't tell you: trait scores are fairly stable over time and are linked to real-life patterns, but they describe tendencies, not destiny. Your mood today, how you read a statement and the short length of the quiz all add some noise, so treat a score near a boundary as "in between". This is a free tool for self-reflection and fun, not a psychological assessment, and it should not be used for hiring, school decisions or any diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't I get a four-letter type?
Type tests split each trait into two boxes, so someone just above the middle and someone far above it get the same label, and small changes in your answers can flip your type. Research shows traits work more like a sliding scale, so this test shows where you actually fall on each one.

Which version should I take?
The quick test is great for a first look at your five traits. The detailed test takes longer but is more precise and adds 29 sub-traits, such as how organized versus how self-disciplined you are.

Are my answers stored or shared?
No. Your answers are scored by your own browser and never sent to us or anyone else. Unfinished progress is kept only in this browser so you can resume, and you can clear it by finishing or starting over. A share link only contains your five scores, never your answers.

Is there a "best" personality?
No. Every trait level has advantages and drawbacks depending on the situation. A low Extraversion score, for example, often comes with good focus and listening, while a high score helps in fast social settings.

Can my results change?
Yes, somewhat. Traits are fairly stable in adults but shift slowly over years, and many people become more conscientious and agreeable and less emotionally reactive with age. If you retake the test, small differences are normal.

Who is this test for?
It is designed for adults. Teens can try it for fun, but the descriptions were written with adult life in mind.
