How to use the Statistics Calculator

  1. Type or paste your numbers into the box, separated by commas, spaces or line breaks.
  2. All the results update instantly as you type.
  3. Use the sample standard deviation when your numbers are a sample from a bigger group, and the population version when they are the entire group.

How it's calculated

Mean = Σx ÷ n
Population variance σ² = Σ(x − mean)² ÷ n   |   σ = √σ²
Sample variance s² = Σ(x − mean)² ÷ (n − 1)   |   s = √s²

The median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted (or the average of the two middle values when the count is even). The mode is the value that appears most often. If every value appears only once, there is no mode.

Frequently asked questions

Sample or population standard deviation — which should I use?
Use the population version when your data includes every member of the group you care about (say, all 30 students in a class). Use the sample version when the data is a subset used to estimate a larger group. Most classes and surveys use the sample version.

Can there be more than one mode?
Yes. If two or more values tie for most frequent, all of them are listed.

How do I paste from Excel or Google Sheets?
Copy a column of cells and paste it straight into the box. Each line becomes one number.
