Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 hashes of any text.
Which hash algorithm should I use?
SHA-256 is the standard choice today for anything security-related. MD5 and SHA-1 are still useful for quick checksums (like verifying a downloaded file wasn't corrupted) but are considered cryptographically broken and shouldn't be used to protect sensitive data.
Can a hash be reversed back into the original text?
No — hashing is one-way by design. The same input always produces the same hash, but you can't recover the original text from the hash itself.
Why would two different files have the same hash?
This is called a collision, and it's astronomically unlikely with SHA-256 or SHA-512. It's more plausible (though still rare) with the older MD5 and SHA-1 algorithms, which is part of why they're no longer considered secure.
